What is Coronary Artery Bypass? (Definition)

The definition of coronary bypass is simple: it involves creating a "detour" (a bridge) to bypass a blocked artery. The surgeon takes a healthy blood vessel from your own body (often an internal mammary artery from the chest or a saphenous vein from the leg) and grafts it onto the heart. Blood can then bypass the coronary blockage and irrigate the heart muscle again (myocardial revascularization).

Single, Double, Triple or Quadruple?

Coronary bypass surgery adapts to the severity of the disease. The term depends on the number of arteries to be repaired during the same procedure:Double coronary bypass: Two arteries are bypassed.Triple coronary bypass: Three arteries are treated (very common).Quadruple coronary bypass: Four detours are needed for complete revascularization.

Indication and Procedure of Cardiac Surgery

Understanding when and how coronary bypass surgery is performed is essential to approach this major procedure with peace of mind.

When to perform this surgery? (Indication)

The main indication for coronary bypass is the presence of multiple severe narrowings in the coronary arteries, particularly in diabetic patients or when the left main coronary artery (the main artery) is affected. It is the reference treatment for a bypass on a complex blocked artery.

The surgical technique

Coronary bypass surgery is performed under general anesthesia.Duration of surgery: The procedure generally lasts between 3 and 6 hours, depending on the number of bypasses to be performed. The process: The heart is often temporarily stopped (circulation is maintained by a heart-lung machine), although some modern techniques allow operating on a beating heart.

Recovery, Scar and Hospitalization in Tunisia

Discover the steps of your recovery after heart surgery in Tunisia: length of hospital stay, scar management, and advice for a gradual return to activity.

Hospitalization

The duration of hospitalization for a coronary bypass is approximately 7 to 10 days in Tunisia. You will spend the first 24 to 48 hours in intensive care (ICU) under continuous monitoring before moving to a regular room.

The Scar

To access the heart, the surgeon performs a sternotomy (opening of the sternum). The coronary bypass scar is therefore vertical, located in the middle of the chest. Another small scar will be present on the leg or arm if a vessel was taken from there. These scars fade well over time.

Postoperative Recovery

The postoperative recovery from coronary bypass requires patience. Convalescence after a coronary bypass lasts about 6 to 8 weeks, allowing time for the sternum to heal. A cardiac rehabilitation program will be recommended to gradually resume physical activity.
